Harry Watts: Forgotten Hero

In 1892, at the age of 66, an old sailor from Sunderland leapt into the River Wear to rescue a young boy from drowning. It was the 36th such rescue in a life filled with heroism and tragedy, and was to be Harry Watts’ last. A local hero in his lifetime, “Harry Watts: The Forgotten Hero” tells the story of this remarkable man and his extraordinary life, from his birth in Georgian Sunderland to his death in 1913, just as Britain prepared for the Great War.
